Elegant Establishments

When I looked through the design book these images or this design caught my eye immediately. It reminds me of something taking over and growing on buildings. I really like how the designers have put their designs onto an image of a city so that you can see how they intend for it to be used. I also like that they have used it for a shop sign because that gives it more of a practical function than just being a sculpture. When I look at this design I can imagine it being something that would take over a complete city and cover everything in it. It looks effective how the joining lines can still be seen they have not tried to hide them in any way so this makes it look more mechanical and engineered than elegant and smooth.

Toyo Ito

The contrast between the black and white in this product/image is exceptional. The shapes are so unique like the middle image that is like a strange doughnut shape the light comes from the bottom and not the middle top like you would expect. The reflections that this creates on the ground are unique and look so good. I like how the end image can be used as a light shade or a light bubble on the ground. The fact they have turned the sculpture into a light means that they create different colours and tones of grey within the images. These sculptures are made of wire so the light also reflects off the metal and illuminates the frame.

Zaha Hadid

This image reminds me of liquid gold, I love how sleek and shiny it looks. This design is actually a light, the bar in the middle in a tubular bar with light through it so it would look great in a modern minimalist house. I think this product is so effective because even the cord that attached the light to the roof is part of the actual design. The light from the tube reflects off the metal which means it shines different tones of colour. The smooth free flowing design is what I am attracted to with this product.

Goya Series: And

John Baldessari (American, born 1931)

I think this piece of art is very controversial because it is so basic and could be said not even to be art. All it is, is an image of a paperclip and a single word beneath it. It is a very witty piece though because it could have been made to ridicule some types of art saying ‘and’ as though what’s the point in this because some art is as simple as this and it could criticise that. There is also the fact that the word and is a conjunction, a word that joins 2 clauses, phrases or sentences together and a paperclip joins pieces of paper and files together. When I first saw this image I thought it was a piece made to criticise the art industry but now I think it could have been genuine but also a slight criticism.

The Vitruvian Man (c. 1485)

Leonardo Da Vinci

I love any of Leonardo Da Vinci’s work because it is all so old and you can tell it has aged. Most of his work has links with science which is something I have a passion for. I picked this image out of all of his because I love the way he has used a circle and a square to measure out the proportions of the human body and draw this image of a man. I also like how it is a man stood upright and one with his arms and legs open which means this image shows a person stood in 2 different positions. It is a very famous image however I have never seen it with the writing on it before, this looks like a page taken from a notebook which makes it even better because it is in its original form with Da Vinci’s notes and ideas on what he had produced. This image makes me wonder if there is any link to science or if it was just a drawing of the human body.

Silver Compass

Carol Bove (American, born Switzerland 1971)

When I first saw this image on the MOMA website I thought it was made from water but then realized it couldn’t be because there’s no where for the water to go. When I read about the piece of art it is made from beads that are hand sewn on at 1cm intervals the idea being that because it has been hand sewn the beads are not prefect. On the MOMA website it says Silver Compass is meant to be installed facing due north, prioritizing an orientation to Earth rather than to any built environment.’ I like this because it shows the artist has even thought about what she wants to happen to her piece even after she cannot see it anymore and possible no longer owns it. I picked this piece to add to my blog because I love how the light reflects off the beads and I bet that if the light shines on it right a pattern is also made on the walls around it from the reflection. It looks like the piece is weighted at the bottom but it isn’t so this must be from the way that the light is on them as the top is shaded and the bottom illuminated. The angles and lines in that image also look effective because you have the corner of the room leading off each side of the picture then the piece of art vertically hanging in the middle but you can see the top and the bottom then there is the corner of the room just behind that can be faintly seen also leading off so all these dimensions also make the artwork stand out.

Huf Houses

Architecture is something I love to look at. I am not so keen on the old fashioned stone/brick houses because I love glass and how light reflects off it. The reason I like Huf Houses so much is that they are so spacious and simple. My favourite kind of art is anything simple and not too fussy. I picked this photograph of a Huf House because the image is symmetrical I also like how the lines of the house are so straight and precise then the hill in front totally contrasts it because it is curved and free. The house looks like it is a grid which reminds me of Mondrians work with the black border around colours. As well as being something aesthetically pleasing the focus of this photograph also has a use it can be lived in which I think it good because it gives it more of a reason to exist instead of just being something to look at.
